BASS GUITAR & VOCALS
JIMMY TEBEAU
Born : October 17, 1967
Jimmy Tebeau is the lead singer and bass guitarist in The Schwag. He is one of the group’s founding members and has been the only consistent band member the entire time. Jimmy also produces and promotes many of the band’s shows each year including festivals and theater shows. He has an Associate of Arts degree in music from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, MO. In school, he performed in the college’s jazz combos and jazz big bands from 1992 to 1994.
Starting in 1989 Jimmy attended 77 Grateful Dead concerts from coast to coast through 1995, which may have been as musically educational as the three years studying jazz and music theory. In 2009, he was hired to be the touring bass guitarist with the Jerry Garcia Band (JGB) featuring Melvin Seals. He played every JGB show for four years while still performing with The Schwag, which added up to 175 shows a year at times. He created the Schwagstock music festival series in 1997 and grew the event to where it needed its own venue. In 2004, Jimmy purchased 330 acres of land and turned it into a festival campground called Camp Zoe in Salem, MO. At the peak of Schwagstock at Camp Zoe, the event averaged attendance of 5,000 people every six weeks throughout the summer. Some of the other bands that performed at Camp Zoe included String Cheese Incident, Marshall Tucker Band, Parliament Funkadelic, Hot Tuna, Molly Hatchet, Los Lobos, Big Brother & Holding Company, and many more.
At the end of 2010, Jimmy closed Camp Zoe after being charged with federal law 21 USC 856, which is also known as the “Rave Act.” He is the only person to ever be charged, prosecuted, and imprisoned for this law. The federal government seized his property and turned it into a state park while they sent him to prison for a year. Jimmy is officially an “outlaw musician” by all definitions for breaking an obscure law while playing music. It all started when he got a saxophone at age 10 taking private lessons and playing in the school concert band. He traded in the sax for bass guitar at age 15 and began playing with a local rock band. After performing over 4,000 concerts Jimmy is still passionate about the music and is looking forward to the next show.
